BROKEN ARROW DOWNTOWN RESIDENTIAL DESIGN STANDARDS

Broken Arrow, Oklahoma’s fourth largest city, is witnessing a renaissance of its downtown area, recently branded The Rose District. With the commercial heart of the community prosperous once again, community leaders saw increased interest from residents wanting to live within a walkable distance, but were concerned that recent residential construction was not carrying

the same level of quality that the public had come to expect from the Rose District. Similarly, the community wanted to reexamine their existing zoning to see if changes could be made to make the “missing middle” of the housing spectrum (two-family buildings, four-plexes, flats and rowhouses) more feasible.

To address these concerns, ADG Blatt teamed with Winter & Company to craft new design standards for the neighborhoods surrounding downtown. The standards focus on further implementing Broken Arrow’s existing Downtown Master Plan and Comprehensive Plan, promoting high quality urban design and walkability, responding to context and key features, and respecting established development patterns. The City of Broken Arrow adopted the design standard in January 2018.
