The Journal Record: Statue honoring businessman Fred Jones planned for downtown OKC

OKLAHOMA CITY – A project to erect a statue honoring businessman Fred Jones in downtown Oklahoma City is in development.

The sculpture, alongside stainless steel panels highlighting the story of Fred Jones, would be placed right across the street from what was once the Fred Jones Manufacturing Co. plant – now home of the 21c Museum Hotel and office complex. The statue would be placed on the north side of W. Main Street at Fred Jones Avenue, in front of multifamily housing development owned by Fred Jones Ave Partners LLC. Architecture and interiors firm ADG is handling the project.

The owner commissioned the sculpture from artist Paul Moore, artist in residence and professor of figurative sculpture at the University of Oklahoma in Norman. In addition to the Oklahoma Land Run Monument that stretches 360 feet near the Bricktown Canal in Oklahoma City, Moore has sculpted more than 150 commissions for government, corporate and private collections worldwide with some of his works on display in the U.S. Capital Collection and the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery in Washington, D.C. The Fred Jones commission is still a work-in-progress.

The Oklahoma City Downtown Design Review Committee is scheduled to consider the proposal during its meeting on Feb. 20.
